Other than a month long stint as a brunette, I’ve been blonde my entire life. Naturally, I’m a darker blonde, but for the past few years I’ve been lightening my hair to a light (almost white) blonde colour. Now, I love being a blonde (blondes have more fun right?!?) but it definitely comes with a lot of maintenance. Especially because I love ashy blonde tones… brassy hair is not my thing!
Over the past few years, I’ve learned a lot about how to take care of bright blonde hair, so I thought I would share a few tips on how to protect your hair and keep your colour fresh!
4 Tips to Keep your Blonde from Turning Brassy!
1. Add a little grey!
Freshly dyed hair will always fade a little bit, so don’t be scared to add a bit of grey dye into your hair. In case you haven’t noticed #grannyhair is totally a thing right now! My hair is often silver when I leave the salon, but after a wash or two, it turns the perfect shade of ashy blonde.
2. Wash only when needed!
To keep your hair colour in tact, try to wash your hair as little as possible. I used to have to wash my hair all the time, but after bleaching it, it seems to get oily far less quickly. Now, I try to only wash my hair only once per week. To make your hair last an extra day, invest in some good dry shampoo to nix any excess oil. I recommend Batiste (in the “tropical” scent to be exact!)
3. Purple products!
Every time I wash my hair, I use a purple conditioner. My current favourite is the Sterling Silver from AG, because it also leaves my hair feeling soooo soft! If your hair is starting to get really brassy, you can also use it as a leave in conditioner over night. Make sure to to evenly coat your hair with product, then slip on a shower cap and sleep with the conditioner on till morning. When you wake up, wash the product out and you should see a very noticeable change!
4. Check your water!
Hard water can play a big role in turning your perfect ash blonde into a orangey mess. If you own your own house, consider purchasing a high quality water softener. It is a bit of an investment, but your hair with thank you!
I hope these tips & tricks help you keep the perfect ashy blonde shade you are looking for. If you have any more tips you think should be added to the list, make sure to let me know in the comments!
